Micrometer Reading with Example

Today i am writing about the Micrometer Reading as you know that last time i published a post about the Scale Photography , some of my website viewers comment about to make a guide about Micrometer Reading . So i make a simple and easy post about Micro-meter Reading in which i explain you all about Micrometer Readings and its types .

 Micrometer Reading with Example and Diagram

Two types of readings are taken in Micrometer reading
  1. Main scale reading
  2. Thimble scale reading
Main scale reading
   This reading is also known as sleeve reading . For taking measurement the object is placed between anvil and spindle O the micro meter .It is then pressed with the help of Ratchet .Then the reading on the main scale is noted in centimetres and Millimetre .In the same way reading in inches is noted in the micro meter of inches the micro meter of Centimetres and Millimetres .are graduated in millimetre and half millimetres . Full millimeters lines are given on the upper side while half-Millimetres  are graduated on the lower side some of such millimeters are graduated in the same side only .
The inches micro meters have two types of graduations on their main scale .These are at 0.1 and 0.025 inches distance . An inch has been divided into 10 equal pars and the divisions are numbered as 1,2,3.....10. This portion is also further divided into four equal parts .the bigger part has value as 0.1 inch and the smaller portion has value 0.025 inch .The micro meter scale commonly used on theodolite contain degrees and their parts .Generally on degree in divided in to 20 to 6 parts .In case of 6 parts , the value of one part is1/6 degree or 10 minutes.
Thimble Scale Reading.
                Thimble is a cylindrical part which is used to open or close the jaws of micro meter by turning the thimble . the spindle moves forward or backward by this .The object for measurement is placed between the spindle and the anvil . The ratchet stop is turned to puts suitable pressure on the object.
The full revolution of millimeter Micrometre has been divided in to 50 parts . Every 5th part is numbered .In this way the numbers written are 5 ,10,15......50 . Every small portion has the value per meter as
                      1    *    1       -    1          - 0.01mm

  The full revolution of this scale of inches micro meter has been divided in to 25 parts .Every 5th parts is numbered .Evert small part has the value of
                                                                         0.025   = 0.001inch .

     Both of the readings are added to calculate the full length .The thimble scale used in theodolite has been divided in to minutes .This scale is further divided in to seconds to read up to 20 , 10 or one second .

    Draw a neat diagram of a micro meter and show a reading of 2.78 mm on it .
   SOLUTION ;

Micrometer Reading

                  Upper main scale reading       = 5.0mm
                   Lower main scale reading       = 0.5mm
                   Thimble scale reading   = 28 * 0.01 = 0.28mm
                   Total reading                                          = 5.78mm
